Motorway break down is one of the things every driver fears. Other vehicles are travelling so quickly it can take them up to a hundred yards to react to a broken down car. The following advice could prevent an accident or loss of life.
  • Pull on to the hard shoulder as far off the road as possible.
  • Turn your hazard lights on.
  • It is possible that your car may get hit from behind. Get yourself and all your the passengers out of the car and away from both the front and the rear of the vehicle. Ideally behind a barrier or up an embankment.
  • Phone the authorities either from an emergency phone or from a mobile.
  • Do not attempt to cross the carriageway to get to an emergency phone they are normally opposite each other.
  • If you have a warning triangle place it around 40 meters behind your car.
