By taking some precautions before you travel you can cut your chances of having a breakdown dramatically.

Before a long journey or once a week - perhaps every Saturday.

  • Check your oil level. It should either be too low nor too high.
  • Check the water level, both for washers and for radiator.
  • Check that lights/indicators and hazard lights are functioning normally.
  • Check the tyre tread depth. Check the inside of the tread as well as misalignment can often cause this to wear faster.

Every journey

  • Check your petrol level. Carry a jerry can, even if empty is a good idea.
  • If your car is in slow moving traffic keep a close eye on the temperature gauge. If you are stationary and your car starts to overheat, turn off the engine until the traffic starts moving again. If you are moving slowly find somewhere safe to pull in and wait until the engine cools. Turning on the internal heating(with fan on full) can sometimes reduce the engine temperature quite effectively.

Every Year/service interval

  • Have you car service at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Get your car's antifreeze tested in October (mark it in you diary now).
